Welcome to the year two webpage! You will be able to find information about the class learning and useful links below. We know that the last year has ended in a very strange way for everyone but we are here to support and help you as you come back to school to dive into learning. I look forward to the year ahead of us!
Meet your Teachers
Hi! My name Miss Brown and I am your class teacher. The teaching assistant in our classroom is Mrs Veal. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoon Mrs Baeza will teach you PE.
PE will be on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Please ensure that your child’s name is written on every item of clothing – even shoes end up getting lost! It also helps if the children can wear shoes that they can fasten themselves like pumps of Velcro trainers to avoid wasting valuable learning time. Please note, earrings must be taken out for PE.
All homework will be sent out via Dojo on Wednesdays to be practised for the following Wednesday. The homework consists of spellings, time tables and reading. Some children will have separate spellings to learn and these will sent to parents via Dojo too. Feel free to take photos of them learning/ practising at home and send it to me for your child to receive dojo points.
The children will be encouraged to read at home at least 3 times a week. They will receive their reading books on a Monday (their copy of their phonics story and an additional book) which need to be returned on Friday. We are not currently sending out home diaries.
Spellings will be linked to the year 2 spelling rules that they have been taught during the week. There will be a test on the following Wednesday. On a Thursday the children will be quizzed on 3 common exception words in class too.
The children will be learning their time tables on a weekly basis. The times tables in year 2 are the 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s.
Please help your child to do this as all of these things are highly important and play a large role in helping your child to learn and progress.
This year we have lots of amazing topics to get us excited about our learning! In the autumn term our history topic ‘The Medieval Ages’ where our focus question is ‘Was it always dark In the Dark Ages?’. We shall also hopefully include a Medieval Style banquet party just before Christmas.
In Maths, we will be covering lots of different things this term including place value, addition, and subtraction, multiplication, and division and statistics. We are also doing daily math minutes where we revise multiple concepts in a quick session like time, money, shape etc.
In Religious Education (RE) this term we will be looking at the following topics: Family, Baptism and Advent. Feel free to send any Baptism photos in via Dojo– these would be lovely on our display in the classroom and get the children excited about their learning.
In Science we are looking at materials and their everyday uses. We shall explore their properties and begin thinking scientifically in our experiments. We shall then move onto animals including humans where we will look at animals and their corresponding babies, the importance of staying fit and healthy and the stages of growth
As a staff, we are committed to ensuring our children continue to learn at St Mary’s. We understand that we are in strange times and protecting our families, friends and our community is now our number one priority. However, here at St Mary's, we will always endeavour to support our learners at this time and continue to learn and grow.
What is Distance Learning?
Distance learning is where pupils cannot physically present at school due to isolating. As children cannot access school to learn, their learning will take place online. It is important that children complete the work set.
How will children and families access their Distance/ Home learning?
As a school, we have recently started using an online tool called Class Dojo. Class Dojo is an online behaviour management system that promotes and fosters positive student behaviours and classroom culture.
Students in each class shall earn 'Dojo' points based on their classroom conduct. Teachers use this tool to Communicate with parents and families, to reward children for positive behaviour within the school, and as a tool to send distance/ home learning home. To familiarize yourself with Class Dojo please follow the attached link below and accept your invitation from your child's class teacher. If you need to distance learn, then your child's class teacher will send over the necessary learning for your child to complete from home for that week, For additional resources, please find our useful links tab.
